Introducing Learning Mode: Master Your Flashcards Across All Decks
Learning Mode is a new way to study with MemoForge: practice flashcards from all your decks in a single session instead of switching between them one at a time.
Why Learning Mode?
Most flashcard apps force you to study one deck at a time, but real learning often means connecting concepts across subjects. Learning Mode lets you:
- Study cards from multiple decks at once, mixing subjects for better retention
- Choose exactly how many cards you want in a session
- Mark any card for another review within the same session
- Optionally prioritize cards you haven't seen in a while
How to Use Learning Mode
Getting started is simple:
1. Open the Learning Modal
Look for the green "Start Learning" button in your dashboard sidebar. Click it to open the Learning Mode configuration modal.
2. Select Your Decks
By default, all your completed decks are selected. You can:
- Click individual decks to toggle them on/off
- Use the "All" and "None" buttons for quick selection
- See how many cards are available in each deck
3. Configure Your Session
Customize your learning experience:
- Cards per session: Slide to choose between 5 and 100 cards
- Review oldest first: Enable this to prioritize cards you haven't studied recently
4. Start Learning
Hit the "Start Learning" button to begin your session. You'll see cards from your selected decks in either random order or oldest-first, depending on your settings.
The "Review Again" Feature
The most useful part of Learning Mode is the Review button. When you reveal a card and realize you need more practice:
- Click the amber "Review" button instead of "Correct" or "Incorrect"
- The card gets added back to your current session
- You'll see it again before the session ends
That way you don't finish a session until you've actually got every card down, without waiting for the next scheduled review to catch a mistake.
Tips for Effective Learning Sessions
Mix Related Topics
Combine decks that cover related subjects. Studying Spanish vocabulary alongside grammar rules helps reinforce both simultaneously.
Start Small
If you're new to Learning Mode, start with 15-20 cards. You can always increase as you build stamina.
Use Review Generously
Don't be shy about marking cards for review. It's better to see a card three times and truly learn it than to rush through once and forget.
Enable "Oldest First" for Review Sessions
When doing periodic review (weekly or monthly), enable "oldest first" to ensure you're not neglecting older material.
What's Next?
This was an early step. Learning Mode now runs on FSRS v5 by default, so scheduling adapts to your actual performance instead of a fixed interval. See our FSRS guide for how that works. A statistics dashboard and study streak tracking have also shipped since this post went up.
Try It Today
Learning Mode is available now for all MemoForge users. Head to your dashboard, click "Start Learning" in the sidebar, and give it a try.
